Ecozone workers appeal to Adid

Some 1,800 workers in a shoe manufacturing plant at the Bataan Economic Zone in Mariveles, Bataan, who stand to lose their jobs by the end of the year, have appealed to Adidas to reconsider its decision to terminate its production orders of the famous brand from their company, the SS Ventures, so they can continue working and make a living for their families, specially during these hard times.Adidas, which has contracted SS Ventures, the lone shoe manufacturing plant at the Bataan ecozone, to produce 200,000 pairs of Adidas shoes monthly for its world market, has  reduced its orders to 9,000 pairs since May, and terminated its contract with the local plant by the end of the year.SS Ventures president and CEO SS Lee said he was surprised when wholesale colthing the Adidas office in Hong Kong suddenly reduced its orders from us to only 9,000 pairs a month from 200,000 and told that it is terminating their production with us contract by December 31 this year.As a result, more than half of company’s replica clothing workforce had to placed on leave while others put on rotation, he said.Their livelihood threatened, the employees held protest-appeal rallies to ask Adidas to restore their usual orders, in as much as the company still maintains its business and marketing office in Manila and continue to make money from the Filipinos who buy their products.Lee said he has likewise appealed to Adidas to maintain the same volume of orders for at least one year before termination – just like the terms it has given to other Adidas contract factories in China and other Asian countries – to allow them to make adjustments, but to no avail.

He was told it was top Adidas management decision who believed the company does not anymore need the Philippine market in view of reduced orders from their usual buyers. On the other hand, the Filipino employees believed that the minimal orders given to the Philippine factory and the sudden withdrawal of
embroidered patches Adidas orders was the idea of a new sourcing Adidas management office in Hong Kong.Based on information received from their fellow Filipino employees in China and Indonesia, the new Adidas management policy has resulted in the dismissal or resignation of at least 26 Filipinos in Adidas in China, while only one Filipino was left in its office in Indonesia. All the Filipinos in China adidas office were reportedly made to resign and that there is only one Filipino working now in Indonesia for adidas, according to their informant.Lee confirmed the decline in orders began only with the new adidas Hong Kong office sourcing management.
